There are simple reasons for both of these moves. The first, putting Hairston in for Swisher is probably the easiest to understand of the two. Hairston has a career .370 average and .952 OPS against tonight’s starter Pedro Martinez during his career. Not helping Swisher’s case is the fact that he’s been utterly pathetic during the playoffs, maybe a night off will give him a kick in the ass.
The other, Molina in for Posada, is because Joe Girardi is a numbers guy and in this situation the numbers definitely favor Molina. Girardi likes using Molina to catch AJ Burnett because Burnett has had a lot more success with Molina back there as opposed to Posada. Not helping Posada’s case is his career numbers against Pedro, a .183 average and a .740 OPS.
