According to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, the Yankees seem to have lost interest in the soon to be 36-year-old outfielder, Jermaine Dye. Heyman tweets that the Rangers, Cubs, Giants, Braves, and Angels are all much more likely targets.
This should come as good news to Yankee fans because with Nick Johnson in the fold that would force Dye to be an everyday left fielder. That would be quite detrimental to the teams defense as Dye has had a UZR/150 of -21.5, -21.5, -21.4, and -24.5 over the past four seasons.
We heard rumors that the Yankees were interested in Dye last week, but that could have been general manager Brian Cashman just checking in with the outfielder to see if he might be interested in a similar role Eric Hinske played in 2009. With so many teams reportedly interested it seems unlikely the Yankees would end up being a serious contender so I wouuld expect Heyman to be right on the money. No Jermaine Dye in 2010.
