That’s The Yankee Universe for those unfamiliar with them, a Yankee blog that is one of the better baseball blogs out there.
The Yankee Universe is having some issues with the Yankees, specifically Major League Baseball Advanced Media sent them a Cease and Desist letter. The letter said their name violated the Yankees’ trademark and they were using their logo without permission.
Your unauthorized uses of the MLB Marks on the Website and in the Domain Name are likely to cause confusion, mistake and deception as to the existence of an affiliation, connection or association between your business on the one hand, and MLBAM, and/or other applicable MLB Entities on the other, and constitute trademark infringement, dilution and unfair
competition in violation of federal and state law.
Accordingly, demand is hereby made that you immediately cease and desist from using the YANKEE UNIVERSE name and the Logo, any other Yankees Mark and any other MLB Mark in and as the name of your Website, to promote the Website, to seek advertising any other commercial opportunities, in and as the Domain Name, and in any other manner that would cause consumer confusion, dilution of the MLB Marks, or imply any sponsorship or endorsement of your Website or its contents by any MLB Entity.
You can read the entire letter here.
The site’s owner, Moshe Mandel, has taken down the logos and put a disclaimer right at the top of the site, but they appear to be fighting for the use of Yankee in the blog’s title.
A lot of people are going to paint the Yankees in a negative light and some will point to the fact that it was technically the MLBAM who sent the letter. One thing I know is that I fully support their fight and hope they come out victorious. It would not only be great for them, but it would be good for all of us who blog about any Major League Baseball team.
One thing I have to say is that there was an issue many years ago over the fact that the Yankees were not the original owners of Yankees.com. They sued the original owner and even though I’m not 100 percent on the details here, I do know that the Yankees currently own Yankees.com. When I started this website I specifically left the word ‘Yankees’ out of the title. Heck, even having pictures of the players in the banner leaves me with the thought that they might come down on me for that.
If any of members of the Yankee Universe come across this post, if there is ever anything we at Bronx Baseball Daily can do to help their cause, just let us know.
