Yankees to Make History Tomorrow

zach-kroenkeAccording to Ben Goessling, the Yankees will make history in the Rule 5 draft tomorrow.  They will will select their own player.  Reports say that the Yankees will have the Nationals select Zach Kroenke for them, and then trade him to the Yankees immediately, as the player to be named later in the Brian Bruney trade.

This will only be the second time that a team has selected their own player.

I understand why they did this.  At the time that they set their 40-man roster they had no idea that Phil Coke would be traded, and Kroenke has put up good minor league numbers.

I guess the Yankees expected Kroenke to be one of the top picks in the draft, and they value keeping him for sure, over a lottery ticket pick where they are not guaranteed their rights.

However, they could still absolutely take someone else, or even two.  They have the room right now.

EDIT: Well clearly this didn’t happen.  Either Goessling was basing the post on rumors, he had a bad source, or the Yankees had a change in heart…

One Response to Yankees to Make History Tomorrow

  1. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the Yankees will need to keep him on their 25-man roster just like anybody else they would take in the rule 5 draft. If they don't he has to go through waivers where he can be claimed by anyone. He would probably get picked as a lefty. I think that team would also have to keep him on their 25-man roster.
