Today, while speaking with Jim Bowden on his XM radio show, former Yankee Jerry Hairston Jr. said that the Yankees didn’t make him an offer because they’re waiting for outfielder Johnny Damon‘s price to drop.
“Brian Cashmans going to get mad at me,” Hairston said, “but Yanks didn’t make me offer because he’s waiting on Damon price to come down”
It’s an interesting idea, that I even brought up the other day, but I don’t see how Hairston could know for sure that the Yankees are waiting on Damon. Cashman isn’t going to keep the entire media in the dark just to go and tell a utility infielder who he isn’t retaining what’s really going on.
Naturally, Cashman denied that this was true. He told Ken Davidoff of Newsday that Hairston was “right” that the Yankees never made him an offer, but “not right” that it was because of Damon. But what did you really expect Cashman to say? Hairston is unlikely to have any insider information and even if it were true, he’s not just going to give up any leverage he has gained against Damon.
