According to Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports, free agent outfielder Xavier Nady, who missed most of last season with Tommy John Surgery, should be ready for the start of spring training if you believe his agent Scott Boras.
“The doctors have his throwing program ahead of schedule,” Boras said.
Morosi also reported that the Cubs are interested in signing the outfielder and there has been no rumors currently linking the Yankees and Nady. Last we heard the Yankees weren’t interested because his price tag was too high. But that was earlier in the offseason and since then it must be assumed that his price tag has at least somewhat lowered.
If the Yankees do go after Nady, I have to imagine they would have a decent shot at beating out the Cubs for his services. Nady would be the forth outfielder for the Cubbies and he could potentially be a starting outfielder for the Yankees. Being a starter should be much more appealing to Nady as it would give him a much better chance to cash in next offseason.
The wildcard here is the Atlanta Braves who could still have interest in Nady according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. Although their GM Frank Wren has said that they are done signing free agents there could still be a match there with plenty of playing time to go around for him.
At this point Chris H at iYankees believes that teams are waiting for Johnny Damon to sign before they start aggressively pursuing other outfielders. I think he’s on to something there as there is just 31 days left in the offseason and still more than a couple of players left on the market.
