According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, even though the Yankees signed switch-hitting outfielder Randy Winn this afternoon it won’t necessarily keep them from acquiring a right-handed outfield bat as a non-roster invitee. That includes free agent Rocco Baldelli.
We already knew that they didn’t want to offer Baldelli a major league contract, but with two stints on the DL last year, which was nearly three or four, there probably aren’t a lot of teams in a rush to offer him one anyways. Baldelli would probably compete with outfielder Jamie Hoffmann and first baseman Juan Miranda for the final roster spot if he accepted such a deal.
It’s unlikely Baldelli is going to want to be put in such a situation because there wouldn’t be a lot of playing time for him even if he beat out those two for the final spot. At this point it is only likely that Baldelli will come to New York if there really is no interest for him out there or if he really wants to play for a contender. Even still, there is probably a fringe contending team out there that could offer him more playing time.
It’s good to know they aren’t closing the door on adding more non-roster outfielders. Especially considering Jamie Hoffmann will have to really impress the Yankees to stick with the team and not be sent back to the Dodgers (Since the Yankees got him in the Rule 5 Draft, they would have to send him back to the Dodgers if he fails to make the 25-man roster).
