The Yankees have signed LHP Royce Ring and OF David Winfree to minor league deals, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Ring, a left-handed middle reliever, will be expected to compete with Boone Logan in Spring Training for another potential lefty spot in the Yankee bullpen. A first-round draft pick of the White Sox in 2002, Ring has pitched in 94 Major League games, and although he doesn’t have any astounding stats, (especially with a 4.93 career ERA), he has shown improvement with his 5-2, 3.03 ERA season last year with the St. Louis Cardinals AAA team. His career batting average against lefty hitters is a solid .229.
Winfree is a corner outfielder that has experience at first and third base. In his first season in AAA last year for the Twins farm-team, he hit a respectable .273 with 14 HR and 61 RBI. He was signed most likely as a backup in case of emergency for the MLB team.
Although we will most likely see these two players start their seasons in AAA, don’t be surprised if you see their names again late in the year.
