The Yankees were presented with their World Series rings on opening day with former Bomber Jerry Hairston Jr. and Hideki Matsui on hand to get their rings. Melky Cabrera and Eric Hinske, now with the Braves, got theirs from Hairston, Chad Gaudin and Edwar Ramirez, now with the A’s, got theirs when the Yankees went to Oakland, and Xavier Nady, now with the Cubs, got his when Brian Cashman brought it to Citi Field.
Johnny Damon got his in the mail according to George King of The New York Post.
“Johnny and I talked about it during spring training and I asked him how he wanted to do it and he said he couldn’t wait,’’ GM Brian Cashman said. “He said, ‘Can you just mail it?’ ’’
“I got it last week,’’ Damon told The Post. “It’s nice.’’
“He sent me a text saying, ‘Thanks so much, it’s beautiful,’ ’’ Cashman said.
This is a little odd considering that the Yankees will be in Detroit on May 10 to play the Tigers and could have given Damon the ring then. It’s too bad that it went down this way because it gave the Yankees a moment to show appreciation toward the other former teammates and now Damon doesn’t get that chance.
The post also reported that the Yankees mailed Brian Bruney his ring instead of personally delivering it. Again, this is a shame as Cashman could have easily brought it to Citi Field as he did with Nady’s ring. Although maybe in this case Cashman elected to mail it as he was not particularly fond of Bruney after he failed to disclose an arm injury last season.
I’m glad to hear they all got their rings though, no matter how they got them.
