Update 5:39: Buster Olney of ESPN is reporting that there was an agreement in principle pending physicals, but the Mariners were worried about David Adams’ injured ankle and when they asked about other prospects the deal fell apart. When that happened the Rangers swooped in and made a better offer. Although any deal with the Rangers will be complicated because of their financial status (they are currently subsidized by the other 29 teams).
Update 1:25: Joel Sherman thinks that the third guy in this deal might be RHP Zach McAllister. Supposedly the Yankees refused to include David Phelps, Hector Noesi, or Ivan Nova though. Sherman did say that the deal might be simply Montero and Adams for Lee.
Update 1:13: This deal is still not official. Buster Olney has reported that the Yankees gave the Mariners a deadline of tonight’s game. This is the Yankees “best and last offer.” What exactly that offer is we don’t know. Montero and Adams are part of the deal and the rumor has been that there are three prospects involved, but Joel Sherman wrote earlier that a fourth may be involved.
Update 11:07: Ken Davidoff of Newsday is reporting that there will be no window to negotiate an extension if or when this deal is eventually finalized.
Update 10:57: Buster Olney is now reporting that a deal “is just about done.”
Update 9:31: Joel Sherman of the NY Post is reporting that any deal for Lee will definitely involve both Jesus Montero and David Adams. In a separate Tweet Sherman said that a third team might get involved, but it would be to move Vazquez.
Update 9:12: Buster Olney of ESPN is reporting that there is no deal yet in place, but Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says talks have intensified this morning between the two teams. So while these talks seem hard to believe they seem to be progressing well at this point. Lee is scheduled to pitch tonight, hopefully it’s for the Yankees and not against them.
Original post: According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, the Yankees have become the front runners in a deal for Cliff Lee as the two teams are “on the brink” of making a deal involving catcher Jesus Montero.
