Nova Taking Vazquez’s Rotation Spot

At least for one start. Here is more via the Yankees LoHud Blog:

Just got out of Joe Girardi’s pregame session. There is a change of plans in the rotation.

Ivan Nova will start on Sunday. Javier Vazquez will move to the bullpen. Vazquez will be available in relief beginning tomorrow.

For now, Girardi said the move is for this one turn through the rotation. He hasn’t made a decision about the rotation spot beyond Sunday.

This is a good decision, even if it is for one start. When Vazquez was going poorly early in the season, manager Joe Girardi skipped him through the rotation one time around and when he came back he was a much better pitcher. Vazquez has been dealing with a dead-arm and this might be the thing he needs to get back into a groove.

The Yankees are still better off with Vazquez pitching well in the rotation. Nova may catch on and stick on the roster into the playoffs, but if he is in the rotation it means the Yankees are in trouble. Hopefully this will right Vaz a little and give Nova the confidence to pitch in the major leagues.
