Pettitte Returns But Mo Blows Lead

The Yankees were about to sweep the Baltimore Orioles and had them right where they wanted them with Mariano Rivera on the mound, but the great closer blew the game when he gave up a game tying solo-shot to Luke Scott. Then David Robertson blew the game in 11th inning for a 4-3 loss.

Here are some highlights:

  • The Yankees were held to 8 hits in 11 innings, all singles. Robinson Cano was the only player with a multi-hit game.
  • The Yankees reached base 9 timse via the free pass.
  • There were 12 runners left on base.
  • Nick Swisher played in his second game in a row and went 0-for-5 with 3 strikeouts.
  • Andy Pettitte returned and pitched very well. His line: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 HR.
  • Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira had the night off, but both came in as pinch hitters.

I criticize Girardi many times for not knowing what the hell littleball is. Does anyone know when the Yanks last squeezed a run home? If so, please tell me.

In the 11th, Nunez is on first, PR for A-Rod. Pena up. The situation SCREAMS for a sac bunt. Instead, an errant pickoff and Nunez is on third with no one out. Thames PH for Pena. Why? Why not try a squeeze with Pena rather than switch right away? You need one run there, not a two-run HR. Thames whiffs. Teix PHs for Gardner then. Why? He gets an intentional pass. Maybe they do the same for Gardner, but he went with Thames and Teix, two guys who can't bunt, instead of Pena and Gardner, two guys who can. You need one run there. Play some littleball.

It appears as if Girardi has no clue how to play littleball, and how many games have the Yanks lost in the last two weeks by one run?

So Teix is walked, Jeter too and Berkman GIDP for the 2nd time in the game.

12 men LOB. 32 in two games in Texas. But Girardi won't friggin' bunt.

    For cryin' out loud, Joe.

I couldn't agree with you more. Without playing small-ball given these opportunities you're just asking for trouble especially knowing how difficult it's been generating runs. Girardi has to stop counting on the long ball or miracle by A-Rod or other player because as we all know that doesn't always happen. Girardi needs to get it through his thick head that bunting is okay especially in critical situations and also it's okay to pullout pitchers when they're on the verge of giving up a lead. Have to admit that Pettitte did a great job coming back from injury. It's ashame that Girardi blew it. Also hope Mo gets his mojo back soon.
