The Yankees acquired reliever Kerry Wood at the July 31st trade deadline for a player to be named later. The Yankees have finally fulfilled their side of the bargain by sending RHP Andrew Shive and IF Matt Cusick to the Indians.
This news really makes a good deal better as neither player had much major league potential at all.
Shive, 25, is a 6’6″ and 260 lbs., but is not exactly a hard thrower and had no plus pitches. He showed longshot potential in 2008 with the Staten Island Yankees, but hasn’t pitched much since then thanks to Tommy John sugery.
Cusick, 24, was acquired by the Yankees in a trade that sent RHP LaTroy Hawkins to Houston in 2008. He has made it all the way to Triple-A Scranton, but wasn’t exactly an inspiring prospect considering his .763 career OPS.
So in the end the Yankees got 26 innings and a 0.69 ERA out of Wood for some money and two organizational players. It’s also possible that they could get a draft pick out of the type-B free agent and even a World Series.
