Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports suggests that Crawford should be waiting until Lee signs though just in case the Yankees fail to sign the ace pitcher. That would potentially free up big money for them to spend on Crawford.
Even if Crawford’s interest in joining the Yankees is minimal, this is absolutely the approach he should take. Considering not much has happened with the outfielder yet, it’s probably safe to say it is the approach he’s taking. Having the Yankees involved would do nothing but drive up his price.
The Angels and Red Sox are expected to be the big teams involved in the bidding for him, but if the Yankees were to get involved it could potentially drive his price through the roof.
Even if the Yankees do sign Lee, Crawford could still use them as leverage. If the Yankees are busy with hammering out a deal with Lee people will see them as preoccupied, but once he’s signed the fear that they are always lurking in the shadows could drive up Crawford’s price as well.
