Yankees Rumors: Crawford and Benoit Discussed at Team Meeting

Via Ronald Blum of the Associated Press:

The Yankees’ No. 1 priority from outside the organization is [Cliff Lee], an official familiar with the meetings said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcements were made.

Tampa Bay left fielder Carl Crawford and Rays setup man Joaquin Benoit are among other free agents the Yankees discussed.

I’m a little skeptical about this news because leaking this sort of things could technically be considered tampering. Although that doesn’t necessarily mean that it isn’t true. The Yankees probably discussed a lot of free agents today. This could mean that these are two they plan on targeting.

That would be after Lee of course.

The Yankees interest in Crawford is certainly possible as he’s a very good outfielder, but at this point they do have three all-star caliber outfielders without an obvious need for another. They could sign Crawford and use one of their outfielders as trade bait.

Benoit, 32, had a great season for the Tampa Bay Rays this year putting up a 1.34 ERA over 60.1 innings. This was after eight years with the Rangers that weren’t exactly impressive. He had a 100 ERA+ before joining the Rays in 2010.

Players can negotiate with any team starting Sunday.
