The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed free agent outfielder Matt Diaz to a two-year deal today, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
Yesterday we had heard that the Yankees were interested in adding free agent outfielder Diaz as a right handed bat to platoon with lefties Brett Gardner and Curtis Granderson.
It was a longshot in the first place as Diaz could probably, and did, find a spot where he could get more consistent playing time than with the Yankees. It would have been nice though as Diaz mashes lefties. Over his career he has a very healthy .907 OPS against them.
Unfortunately the Yankees are now going to have to move on to other outfield options.
