Rumors: Yankees Interested in Rich Harden

Via Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports:

Harden’s representatives are gauging interest from a number of teams. Some like him as a starter. Some like him as a reliever.

The New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies are among the teams who have checked in, a source said.

With it looking more likely that Andy Pettitte could retire the Yankees have to start figuring out who will be their option as the no. 5 starter. Ivan Nova will certainly get a shot, but the presence of Nova means that an option like Rich Harden is not so volitile.

Perhaps the Yankees could sign Harden to an incentive laden deal that won’t burn them if he doesn’t work out. If he does spend the entire season on the DL, as he usually does, they can then turn to Nova, Hector Noesi, David Phelps, and others.

Not a terrible idea. At least he has strong potential.
