Rumors: Yankees Review Medicals for Russell Martin

Via Joel Sherman of the NY Post:

Mets, Yankees have both received medicals on Russell Martin, will meet his rep here. Deal unlikely to get done with any team at Meetings.

The Yankees are set on going with Jorge Posada as their DH. He isn’t expected to catch at all. So that leaves the Yankees with Jesus Montero as their starting catcher with Francisco Cervelli and Austin Romine as their backup options.

Romine’s bat probably isn’t quite ready for the majors yet and Cervelli’s defense was horrible last season. So the Yankees probably would like to upgrade behind the plate and Martin is a decent idea as a veteran backup who could even start for long stretches if Montero struggles.

I haven’t thought that the Yankees and Martin would be the best matchup because he might be looking for more playing time, but they are continuing to talk with him. He’s already turned down a $4.2 million deal with another $1.1 million in incentives from the Dodgers. I wonder if the Yankees would even be willing to go that far.
