Russell Martin May Be Leaning Toward Red Sox

Via Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News:

Source says that although Russell Martin has offers from three AL East teams (NYY, BOS, TOR), the Red Sox appear to be his top choice.

The situation is that Martin was once one of the best young catchers and has had a few bad seasons. So he’s going to look for a place where he can get a good amount of playing time to boost his stock.

The Yankees have offered him a starting job, but he’ll have Jesus Montero lurking behind him potentially taking starting time from him. The Blue Jays have a similar situation where J. P. Arencibia will be pressing him for time. In Boston the two catchers challenging him for time are not nearly as good in Jason Varitek and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

So potentially he could have the starting job with all three teams, but the Red Sox don’t have the top prospect catchers like the Yankees and Blue Jays do. My guess is he’ll pick the Red Sox, but money might be the deciding factor.
