Rumors: Don’t Rule Out Damon Until Deal is Done with Jones

Via Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports:

While A. Jones appears Yankees’ focus, don’t rule them out on Damon. He wants more ABs than Yanks can give, but loves NY.

And via Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated:

Yankees like Damon and believe he might be able to help tortured A.J. Burnett. But Damon can get more time w/Angels or Rays.

The Yankees clear focus right now seems to be Andruw Jones and at this point it would be a surprise if they didn’t sign him, but Johnny Damon does appear to be a real backup option for them.

The Yankees are looking for a outfielder who they can compliment with their lefties Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner. Damon himself is a lefty, but isn’t terrible against left handed pitching. His OPS comes no where near Jones’ does against southpaws, but his batting average over the past few years has been respectable. Damon also appears to have other intangibles that the Yankees like.

Again though, it seems very likely that they will eventually sign Jones and unlikely they would sign both.

  2. Franco Kotos says:

No reason to consider Damon…defense is weak and the Yankees are looking for a right handed bat…

  3. Joe says:

    minor league deal, ok

    anything else, hell no
