Yankees have acquired LHP Jose Ortegano off waivers from Atlanta and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Ortegano, 23, is a starting pitcher who threw 131 innings with a 5.98 ERA while pitching mostly in Triple-A. He throws a fastball in the 86-88 mph range with a good curveball and changeup to go with it. That doesn’t sound very impressive, but the Yankees are just adding another left handed pitcher to the mix with Pedro Feliciano and Boone Logan both dealing with minor injuries this spring.
That’s all he’ll likely be for the Yankees, a situational lefty, despite the fact that he’s mostly been a starter in high minor league career. Definitely not a major move, but could end up being one that makes a good small impact in case of an injury.
