Along with the rest of this weekend’s cuts the Yankees have also released the two pitchers they selected in the Rule 5 Draft, Daniel Turpen and Robert Fish. They also got back George Kontos whom the Yankees lost to the Padres in the same draft.
The right handed Turpen will return to the team the Yankees took him from, the Boston Red Sox. Fish, a lefty, will not return to the team he was selected from, the Angels, instead he was claimed on waivers by the Kansas City Royals.
Those two loses are not a big deal as neither had any chance to make the Yankees roster and it was confusing as to why they even drafted them in the first place. It’s kind of exciting to get Kontos back though.
Kontos will report directly to minor league camp instead of trying for a job with the major league team. Kontos, who threw in the mid-to-upper 90’s before Tommy John surgery, will probably spend the year in Triple-A. He will get a shot in the majors at some point though out of the bullpen.
