Mark Prior was cut, he’ll go to extended spring training. IF Doug Bernier, OF Justin Maxwell, and IF Ramiro Pena were assigned to Triple-A. C Austin Romine to Double-A. Ronnie Belliard was released. Romulo Sanchez had his rights sold to a Japanese team, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
It has also left the bullpen options down to either LHP Steve Garrison or RHP Luis Ayala for that final spot. Garrison probably has the edge here, but they’ll probably take a look at the teams they are facing and decide which pitcher will be needed more.
Nothing surprising here. The Yankees could have been tempted by Montero’s bat and kept him with the team, but they feel he needs more time to develop. He won’t be in the minor leagues for long though. If he’s hitting he’ll be in the Bronx, sooner if Russell Martin doesn’t cut it.
Chavez is making people believe that he could turn back the clock a few years with his play this spring. Since he’s been healthy it has pretty much been no contest with him and Belliard, who had to be released with no fit on this club. Nunez has passed Pena now on the teams depth charts. I wonder if the Yankees will trade Pena now or hold on to him for depth purposes. There is no rush to move him as he’s not worth much anyway.
Prior being sent to extended spring training instead of Triple-A probably has more to do with a logjam of relievers at that level instead of anything related to Prior himself. It makes me think that he could be next in line as a reliever after Garrison or Ayala.
