Joe Girardi said he plans to announce his pitching assignments tomorrow. Decisions were made tonight, and Girardi is going to talk to his players first, then make the decisions public. When asked whether Ivan Nova has earned a rotation spot, Girardi said “I need to talk to my players first,” but also nodded his head.
The Yankees are essentially deciding on three spots, the fourth and fifth spots in the rotation and the longman in the bullpen and have three players to choose from, Ivan Nova, Bartolo Colon, and Freddy Garcia. So they are all likely to make the team, it’s just a matter of who gets which spot.
Nova appears to have a rotation spot locked up already so it comes down to Colon or Garcia for the fifth spot and whoever isn’t chosen will go to the bullpen.
Sergio Mitre was part of this equation until this morning when he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Chris Dickerson. Mitre wasn’t likely to win a spot anyway and the Yankees may need an extra outfielder if Curtis Granderson starts the season on the DL. So it was a natural swap.
Also involved in this entire ordeal is Kevin Millwood who was signed to a minor league contract Friday morning. Millwood will start the season in Triple-A, but if he doesn’t make the team by May he can opt out of his contract and look to sign with another team. So he is more of an issue for later and will not have much of a role in tomorrow’s decision.
