Damaso Marte Plans to Begin Throwing After All-Star Break

Yankees Damaso MarteNot sure how I missed this the other day but…Via Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York:

Yankees left-handed reliever Damaso Marte told ESPN NewYork.com on Friday that doctors have said he can begin to play catch after the All-Star break.

“I have been working hard to come back,” said Marte, who underwent shoulder surgery last October. “It’s too early to do anything right now since it’s only been five months.”

So here is the deal. Marte might have been told that, or he might have heard that. Shoulder surgery isn’t an exact science and it’s really hard to predict what is going to happen and how long it will take to recover from. To be on the safe side it is usually better not to expect pitchers coming off shoulder surgery back when they say they will be back. Typically there is at least one setback.

So while Marte thinks he’s going to start throwing after the All-Star break it is more likely that what Brian Cashman said last week, that Marte will be out for the entire season, is much more likely to happen. Hope for the best, but don’t hold your breath.

Even if Alex is OK tomorrow, I'd DH him. Keep him off the turf, play Nunez at 3B (Lefty Cecil pitching, Nunez needs a game. He only has 1 AB). It also would keep Chavez off the turf tomorrow as well.
