Phil Hughes Has Been Put on Anti-Inflammatories

Phil HughesVia Brian Heyman of the Journal News:

[Phil Hughes‘] supposed to start a long-toss program [Sunday] to try to build arm strength. While Hughes has said he feels fine physically, Girardi also revealed that the 24-year-old righty has been put on anti-inflammatories.

“I think you can look at every pitcher’s arm and probably see some inflammation,” Girardi said.

The Yankees have insisted that Hughes has been healthy all season long, but this at least acknowledges that there is some concern with his arm. The initial plan wasn’t even to put him on the DL, but instead they were just going to send him to the minor leagues outright. Hughes was able to talk him out of that. To my knowledge they haven’t sent him in for even a single MRI.

I wish they would though, he tossed a lot of innings last season relative to years past and there is potential that this is something more than just simple soreness or a “deadarm” whatever that is anyway. Hopefully the anti-inflammatories will help him to build arm strength more quickly and he’ll be back on the field in just 15 days.

It's beginning to look serious. So now they reveal he has inflammation. What else are they concealing? Why don't they send him for an MRI? Of course it's true that every pitcher who's been around has some issues in his shoulder, but Hughes is only 23 or 24. He shouldn't have inflammation in his shoulder. So it looks like he overdid it last year and will begin paying for it now. We should assume he's not coming back for a while and start considering alternatives.

Hughes is turning into a fragile primadonna…i hope they figure out his problems but I'm not feeling optimistic either…he's got very good stuff but he may be another of those injury plagued pitchers…
