Yankees’ Francisco Cervelli Could Return Next Week

francisco-cervelliVia Chad Jennings of the Journal News:

Girardi indicated that it’s possible Francisco Cervelli will be activated during the upcoming home stand. He’ll DH tonight and catch again tomorrow. “We’ll see how he’s feeling,” Girardi said.”I’m not saying we’ll make a decision, but he’s doing pretty good.”

This is good news. Even though Cervelli leaves a lot to be desired as an everyday player, he is a decent backup. Right now the Yankees have, or actually haven’t been, using Gustavo Molina as the backup because he’s such a light hitter. With the off-days and rain outs the Yankees have been having it hasn’t been such a big deal, but with Russell Martin coming off of knee and hip surgery he’s going to need plenty of rest.

It seems possible that the Yankees could be rushing Cervelli back, but his foot is supposedly already at 100 percent, he really just needs to get his timing down at the plate because he’s missed so much time. So there is really no risk that he could have a setback. He just might be ineffective at the plate for a little while, but those who remember last summer are probably used to that from him anyway.

Cervelli has played two games so far for Tampa (Th & Fri) in his rehab. He's 2 for 7 with an RBI.

m excited to see Cervelli back soon. Martin has gotten lucky with all the rainouts and days off. he needed those days off and we havent had to see Molina hit but one game. I hate to keep picking on Molina but he is not a major league caliber player they have names for guys like Gustavo Molina–COACH.

He will make a good bullpen catcher and coach but do not give that man a bat.

Lets hopw that work Cervelli did with Cano in the DR in the winter will still pay off. Happy easter Yankee fans

The pitching staff has gotten lucky with the off-days and rainouts. How else do we have 16 games, the starters only averaging 5 1/3 a start, a 10-6 record, and this:

Mo, 10 games, Joba 10 games, Soriano 9 games and Robertson 8 games ?

That won't last, so we can enjoy it while we can. But the starters will need to do better.

The return of Cervelli it's good news for NYY; Martin it's excellent, but he need a replacement in a couple of games weekly.

    Cervelli is back.

  5. Hardcore Yankee Fan says:

As much hate as I give Cervelli, he is a serious upgrade from Gustavo. And it is true that Martin can't play every day and with 29 games out of 31 days scheduled in May, Cerv is coming back just in time to fill in 3-5 of the games.

  6. Paul Knopick says:

Molina started and caught two games and they were two of the best-pitched games in the Yankee season, including Nova's only real solid outing. Coincidence?
