Yankees Sign Cuban Righty Reinier Casanova

The Yankees have signed 24-year-old right handed pitcher Reinier Casanova who defected from Cuba a couple of years back, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America.

Signing a 24-year-old that not many people know about usually isn’t a big deal, but there is always added interest when they come out of Cuba as information coming out of there can often be sporadic. Here is what Baseball Reference had to say about him:

Reinier Casanova is the son of Leovigildo Casanova and the nephew of Luis Casanova.

Reinier was 3-3 with a save and a 6.47 ERA for Pinar del Rio in 2007-2008. He improved to 6-5 with four saves and a 3.22 ERA in 21 games in the hitter-friendly league in 2008-2009. The right-hander then defected from Cuba.

For the record he is listed at 6-0 and 227-pounds.
