Yankees Claim Kanekoa Texeira off Waivers

kanekoa-texeiraThe Yankees made a minor move last week when they claimed right handed reliever Kanekoa Texeira off of waivers from the Kansas City Royals, according to Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York.

Texeira is a groundball machine and a former Yankee who was taken away in the Rule 5 draft last season by the Seattle Mariners and became a Royal when the Mariners placed him on waivers. The Yankees initially acquired him along with Nick Swisher in a deal with the Chicago White Sox back in 2008.

In his two seasons in the majors, Texeira has a 4.66 ERA, 33 strikeouts, and 28 walks over 67.2 innings. He isn’t likely to spend a lot of time in the majors with the Yankees. Instead he’ll probably spend most of his time in Triple-A as insurance for the bullpen.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Texeira, the Yankees moved Phil Hughes to the 60-day DL. He is now eligible to come off the DL on June 14.
