Eric Chavez Getting Closer to Returning to Yankees

Yankees general manager has previously said that he hoped that infielder Eric Chavez would return by the All-Star break and yesterday he took a big step toward that as he took batting practice and fielded some groundballs in Tampa, according to George King of the NY Post.

The Yankees could certainly use the return of Chavez who would fill multiple roles for them immediately. Most importantly would be to get Alex Rodriguez some time away from third base. With Derek Jeter on the DL Eduardo Nunez has been the everyday shortstop leaving Ramiro Pena has the backup third baseman.

Chavez would also provide the Yankees with a legit backup first baseman. Something they have not had since his injury and instead have been forced to use Jorge Posada at first.
