Russell Martin’s MRI Comes Back Negative

russell-martinRussell Martin, who missed last night’s game after his back tightened up, went for an MRI today and the results came back negative, according to Ian Begley and Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York. He will miss this evening’s game against the Red Sox, but he should return to the lineup shortly.

“He’s still day to day, he is not ready to go,” Joe Girardi said. “He is slightly improved from yesterday but not enough to go. I believe he had an MRI today and it came back clean.”

Martin can use the rest. After a hot start in April, Martin has hit a pathetically low .191 with a .635 OPS since May 2nd. However, his backup, Francisco Cervelli, isn’t much of an upgrade offensively and is a huge black hole when it comes to defense. Maybe it’s time the Yankees called up Jesus Montero

One Response to Russell Martin’s MRI Comes Back Negative

  1. Mike Sommer says:

Agreed. One friend of mine facetiously said (upon Cervelli's third throwing error in two games tonight) "When did Knoblauch come back as the Yankees catcher?" As for Martin, good news. We've had enough bad news in the last day or two. (Joba, Maxwell, Norton, Prior…)
