Yankees Place Derek Jeter on DL

derek-jeterBefore last night’s game, the Yankees placed The Captain Derek Jeter on the 15-day disabled list after he suffered a calf injury the night before.

Jeter apparently didn’t think he needed to be placed on the DL, but with interleague play looming, the Yankees wanted to make sure they had a deep bench for the National League parks, according to Joel Sherman of the NY Post.

Jeter will be eligible to come off the DL on June 29, at home against the Brewers. With six hits left to go though, it doesn’t seem possible that he would be able to reach his milestone 3,000th hit at home. He does go to Citi Field to play the Mets after that though so there is a chance he does it in New York.

Ramiro Pena was called up in Jeter’s place, but it will be Eduardo Nunez who gets the bulk of the playing time in his absence.
