Trade Rumors: Willingham Too Pricey for Yankees

Via Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports:

#Yankees checked on #Athletics’ Willingham. Didn’t like price. #tradedeadline #MLB

The idea here must have been to use Josh Willingham as the DH in place of Jorge Posada. He’s not a bad option either despite his down year. He’s hitting just .248 with a .788 OPS, but that’s still good enough for a 117 OPS+ and Oakland is certainly not a hitters park. He’s also a prospective type-A free agent.

Willingham would be a great addition to the Yankees lineup, but he’s with Oakland which means dealing with Billy Beane. Not that that’s a bad thing, but Beane certainly values his type-A status and likely wants a decent package in exchange for Willingham otherwise he is very comfortable holding on to him and getting draft picks.
