CC Sabathia Named AL Pitcher of the Month of July

Remember when CC Sabathia was so good down the stretch for Milwaukee in 2008 that it made the Yankees salavate over him? Well lately he’s been even better than that and Major League Baseball is acknowledging that by naming him AL Pitcher of the Month for July.

In 5 starts Sabathia has a 4-1 record with a 0.92 ERA, 50 strikeouts, and 13 walks in 39 innings. He struck out eight batters or more in every start and also set a career high of 14 in one game against the Mariners last month, a game he nearly had a perfect game in before rain interrupted.

That’s just part of an eight game stretch where he has a 1.01 ERA, 78 strikeouts, and 16 walks in 62.2 innings. That is part of an even bigger stretch where Sabathia has gone 13-2 with a 2.08 ERA over 15 games going back to May 19. His fWAR of 5.6 is the highest in all of baseball this season.

He’s truly in the middle of an exceptional year. 20 wins seems like an eventuality at this point and he should be in the Cy Young race with Jered Weaver and Justin Verlander right down until the end of the season.

Some time ago (over the winter maybe) there was a discussion here about who is better: Jimenez, King Felix, Cliff Lee, etc. I said I'd take Sabathia and everybody said I was crazy. By the way, I hear Doug Fister is having a great year for Seattle, he hangs in every game and only gives up one or two runs a game but his team never scores so he can't win. Maybe this year they can give the A.L. Cy Young award to Doug Fister. Last I heard he was 3-12 or something like that. The runner up can be A.J. Burnett, I hear he also is very good at keeping his team in the game and pitches quality innings but doesn't get much run support.
