Derek Jeter Out of Lineup After HBP

The Yankees don’t expect to put Derek Jeter on the disabled list, but he is out of the lineup at least for one day. Jeter has a bruised right middle finger after getting hit by a pitch in the 3rd. He didn’t immediately leave the game, but was taken out in the 4th inning.

“It’s not broken,” said Jeter, who had X-rays at the Stadium that came back negative. “It didn’t feel good, but fortunately it’s not [bad]. I just have problems gripping, which can affect throwing and swinging, so that’s a problem when you try to play baseball. As long as I can throw and swing, then [I’ll play].”

This puts some importance on Eric Chavez to stay healthy. As long as he can stay healthy and be reliable, the Yankees should have no problem using Eduardo Nunez at short and giving Jeter a couple of days off. It seems like for the next few days Jeter should sit so he can be ready to go against the Red Sox this weekend.
