Back Spasms Keep Hughes from Making Start

Phil Hughes will not make his regularly scheduled start against the Twins on Monday after he experienced lower back spasms over the weekend. Instead he will pitch on Tuesday or Wednesday and A.J. Burnett will go in his place on Monday, according to Chad Jennings of the Journal News.

Hughes suffered the spasms while throwing a bullpen the other day. He said that he’s had this happen in a similar way about three years ago, but last time it wasn’t bad enough for him to even miss one start.

It is very doubtful that this will continue to effect him past this week. There is a chance that it would be enough of an excuse to move him to the bullpen though and finally do away with the 6-man rotation.
