Dellin Betances Starting Tonight for the Yankees

Yankees manager Joe Girardi didn’t initially pick a starting pitcher for the final game of the season. He did say that none of his postseason starters or main relievers would pitch today which left open an interesting question of who exactly was going to start today’s game, Scott Proctor?

Nope, instead it will be one of their top pitching prospects Dellin Betances, according to Jon Lane of the YES Network.

Betances isn’t quite ready for the big stage, but the Yankees called him up this September as he was already on the 40-man roster so there was no harm in doing so. He wasn’t expected to get into a game though, but he pitched last week because of the Yankees hectic end of the season schedule.

Now he is starting today’s game as sort of a last resort. They don’t want to burn anyone out or risk an injury before the playoffs so they might as well start Betances. It also gives them a chance to see him in action. His first appearance was quite a forgettable one as he was clearly suffering from some jitters and had problems finding the strike zone.
