Hughes Could Move to Pen as Back Gets Better

Back spasms have kept Phil Hughes out of starts this week as he was twice scratched from scheduled games, but everything appears back on track as he threw a bullpen today and said afterward that he felt no pain, according to Chad Jennings of the Journal News.

Manager Joe Girardi wasn’t as enthusiastic and said that he wanted to wait until tomorrow and see how his back felt before deciding on the next course of action. Hughes could start next week or, as it sounding more like, he could just move to the bullpen.

“I think you have to think about that,” Girardi said. “I think that’s one of the things you have to think about just because he hasn’t thrown in a while and we’re not sure how it’s going to play out in the next couple of days after throwing this bullpen. Just a lot of decisions to be made by Friday.”

At this point it is hard to see him getting a playoff start anyway so it’s probably for the best to get him an appearance or two out of the pen to prepare.

With a slew of pitchers who look major league ready, I think we're gonna see Hughes passed by some of them. His future could well be as a long reliever/spot starter, a 7th inning guy if Soriano opts out (oh please), or as trade bait. I just have no confidence in him anymore. I feel like he's had his shot. Management has consistently overvalued this guy, and we've seen Kennedy become a star in Arizona and Chamberlain be a force out of the bullpen, it's time to adjust their view of him.

you're an idiot. this guy has proven time and time again he's got the tools and he knows how to use them. i see hughes as the eventual Ace of the New York Yankees. Period.

why is it that when a poster disagrees with another poster the idiot word is flung so easily. Hughes is the reason we lost to the rangers last year. he can't face a high powered line up. He has nothing on his fastball. it is a meatball. Get rid of hughes, PLEASE
