Rumor: Eric Chavez Leaning Toward Retirement

Yankees backup third baseman Eric Chavez is a free agent this offseason, but instead of looking around for more work he is leaning toward retirement, according to Joel Sherman of the NY Post.

Chavez, now 33, was once a star for the Oakland Athletics where he played for 13 years. However, injuries have become a serious problem for him over the past five or so years and he has not been the same caliber player recently.

In his year with the Yankees he spent two month on the DL with a foot injury and served as the backup third and first baseman while hitting .263 with a .676 OPS. The Yankees don’t really need him back as Brandon Laird plays the same position and should be ready for the major leagues next season.
