The Yankees director of professional scouting, Billy Eppler, got a second interview with the Angels for their vacant general manager position, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.
Heyman also reported that Yankees vice president and director of amateur scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, did not get a call back.
Eppler is Yankees general manager Brian Cashman‘s right hand man. When it comes to making trades, Eppler’s opinion is the biggest one that matters after Cashman himself.
Eppler has been known in the past as a “stats guy” in the past (Joe Torre portrayed him that way in his book and word got out that he signed Edwar Ramirez based on stats alone). However, a NY Times article by Tyler Kepner from back in 2009 tells a story of a much more well rounded guy than that.
In the article from nearly three years ago Cashman was quoted as saying, “He’ll be a future GM somewhere.” It looks like this could be it.
