The Yankees general manager Brian Cashman had spoken with the agent for starters Roy Oswalt and C.J. Wilson earlier in the week and yesterday he started preliminary discussions with the agent for Edwin Jackson, according to George King of the NY Post.
This doesn’t signal that Jackson is the Yankees top target. Instead, Cashman is merely discussing all of the top free agent starters on the market. Mark Buehrle is next and then he’ll probably meet with the agent of other starters as well.
Cashman has indicated that by keeping CC Sabathia in the mix early it gives the Yankees the opportunity to pursue free agent starters on their terms. That likely means he’ll monitor the market for each starter and then if he feels comfortable with a particular asking price he’ll step in and make a bid. The Yankees are often used as a way to drive up the prices of free agents and by doing it this way they won’t be forced to overpay for pitching.
