State of the Union: Cashman Speaks at the GM Meetings

The G.M. meetings are underway Milwaukee this week and reporters met up with him and got a sort of state of the offseason address. Here is what he had to say (via Chad Jennings of the Journal News):

  • Teams have inquired about a number of current Yankees in the majors and minors. Cashman named Nick Swisher, Brett Gardner, Russell Martin, and even A.J. Burnett specifically.
  • He also mentioned that teams have inquired about Jesus Montero, but said that he wouldn’t deal him unless it was like a unique situation.
  • Cashman wants another lefty in the bullpen, but said it would be a luxury at this point and doesn’t expect the Yankees to land one this offseason.
  • Cashman expects the rotation to include CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Phil Hughes, Ivan Nova. The 5th spot will be given to a minor leaguer, a free agent, or somebody they trade for.
  • Hughes is working out this offseason so he can show up to camp in shape next year, unlike last year when he showed up overweight.
  • They have not heard from Eric Chavez, who is pondering retirement.
  • They would be open to re-signing him, Andruw Jones, Freddy Garcia, and Bartolo Colon under the right circumstances.
  • Cashman has already met with C.J. Wilson‘s agent and will try to meet with more agents as time provides.

Obviously the most interesting tidbit here is that the Yankees have gotten phone calls about Burnett. That could simply be posturing though to give him more leverage.
