Yankees Watch Cuban Outfielder Yoenis Cepedes Workout

It came and went pretty quickly, but a video circulated yesterday showcasing Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman saw the video and was impressed enough that he sent somebody to the Dominican Republic yesterday to watch him work out, according to Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News.

Cashman tried to play down a Yahoo report that the Yankees were very interested in the 26-year-old center fielder, but their interest seems real as he told Feinsand that they will continue to scout him.

The Marlins are expected to be major players for Cespedes, who is asking for a $30 million contract similar to the one Arodys Chapman signed a year ago.

The only substantive thing I've heard about Cespedes is that he's comparable to Mike Trout. Mike Trout had fantastic numbers in A and AA ball, but he's 19 years old and hit only .220 in 40 games with the Angels. In other words, he's just a prospect.
We already have an All-Star, Silver-Slugger centerfielder in Curtis Granderson, and baseball's best defensive leftfielder, who also led the AL in stolen bases, in Brett Gardner. Swisher may stink in the postseason, but he's a pretty good rightfielder for six months out of the year.
So it's not like there's any pressing need to upgrade our outfield.
In sum, it seems to me that $30M is an awful lot of money to spend for an outfield prospect.

I agree with you but, Cespedes can be brought in to spring training and be platooned with swisher if he makes a good showing during the spring. If he is what they say he is, imagine what the lineup would look like. Jeter, granderson, tex, arod, Cano, Cespedes, Montero. catcher, Gardner…………. WOW Money is the question.

The yankees should sign Yoenis Cespedes and watch him throught spring game or tade Nick Swisher to the C .Reds for Arodys Chapman and minor league player. We have Melky Mesa, Kevin De Leon, Kelvin Duran, Eduardo Sosa and Mason Williams almost next on hand. Could be a good sign.

$30 mil seems like a good deal, I see him averaging 25-30 HRs a year after a little seasoning in triple A then he could replace Swisher towards the end of next year who will be leaving as a free agent. It would be great for the Yanks to lock up a young 26 year old power hitting Right Fielder.

imagine the new crop of sluggers, Montero and Cespedes if they pan out.
