Over the past few years, Brian Cashman has done a great job putting together a bullpen and a large part of that has been signing a ton of relievers and hoping that one or two pan out. Ayala is a perfect example of this. They signed him for almost nothing, had little to no expectations of him, and got lucky.
The questions is, do they have faith that he would be able to do it again. That’s an important question because last year he cost almost nothing and came in on a non-guaranteed contract. This year that won’t be the case so they have to be sure he is worth the money and the roster spot.
Bowden mentioned the Mets, Rays, Blue Jays, Angels, and Red Sox as the other interested teams.
