Rumor: Yankees have slim chance of signing Cespedes

The rumors this offseason have been that the Yankees were among the most interested in signing Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Most of that has been generated by reporters whose main beat wasn’t the Yankees (usually it was by guys who cover the international market).

The Yankee beat reporters have so far been skeptical. First Joel Sherman of the NY Post said that he highly doubted it and now Marc Carig of the Newark Star-Ledger tweeted that the Yankees have about the same chance to land Cespedes as Darvish – “slim to none.”

Considering the Yankees need to improve their rotation, and their reluctance to do it because of money, makes me think that they are right. There is probably no way in which they upgrade their outfield, which is currently one of the best in baseball, when they refuse to make improvements to the rotation.

We’ll see what happens though. Cespedes is currently trying to sort out his residency in the Dominican Republic, the last step before he can be declared a free agent.

These comments come from the same people that said the Yanks had no interest or budget in Tex and AJ.
