After the season ended Brian Cashman indicated that he would like to re-sign all, or at least most of, the Yankees free agent veterans. Except for Freddy Garcia that hasn’t happened yet.
They are still in talks with outfielder Andruw Jones, who has also had talks with the Red Sox. But even though they are maintaining talks, Cashman said there is nothing to report as of now, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
As for Eric Chavez, the Yankees have held off talks with the infielder until they figure out what they are doing with Japanese infielder Hiroyuki Nakajima, whom they won the posting to earlier this offseason, Hoch reported. The Yankees have 30 days to negotiate a deal with Nakajima otherwise he goes back to Japan. The cutoff date for that is January 6.
The Yankees certainly need a solid backup infielder with Old-Man-Rod and Derek Jeter as their regulars. So if they can’t come to an agreement with Nakajima, they will likely be aggressive with Chavez. Although I feel like they will eventually work out a deal with Nakajima as he is younger, probably won’t cost more money, and doesn’t come with the health problems Chavez does.
