Yankees make Garcia signing official, DFA Curtis

The Yankees have had an agreement with starting pitcher Freddy Garcia for a little while now, but it hasn’t been official until today. To make room for him on the 40-man roster the Yankees designated minor league outfielder Colin Curtis (link).

Curtis, 26, missed all of the 2011 season with a shoulder injury after he finally reached the majors in 2010. It’s a little bit surprising to me that they DFA’d him over Justin Maxwell, who is older at age 28. Maxwell also missed most of the 2011 season with an injury, but did manage to play in 48 games, putting up a .358 OBP and a .945 OPS.

There is a chance that he could remain with the team if nobody claims him on waivers. Curtis played in 31 games with the Yankees in 2010. He had a .250 OBP and a .538 OPS in 64 plate appearances.
