Rumor: Cuban lefty working out for Yankees Thursday

The Yankees are interested in signing a Cuban defectee and it isn’t Yoenis Cespedes or even Jorge Soler. The latest Cuban ball player to draw their attention is 18-year-old left hander Gerardo Concepcion, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes.

Concepcion established residency and was declared a free agent yesterday, Rojas reported. His agent told Rojas that he set for a training session at the Yankees training camp in the Dominican Republic on Thursday.

Not a lot of information about Concepcion out there yet, but he earned Rookie of the Year honors in Cuba last year in their top amateur league going 10-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 21 appearances.

Anytime there is an 18-year-old lefty with promise available, the Yankees will certainly be interested. The Rangers, Phillies, Cubs, and White Sox are also expected to be interested as well.
