Rumor: Yankees contacted Carlos Pena

Another option to fill the Yankees open DH spot is Carlos Pena, who said on MLB Network Radio’s Home Plate program that he has been in touch with the Yankees and that he will continue to evaluate his options.

I discussed the possibility of using Pena in a DH platoon and I like the idea, but the Yankees only have about $1-$2 million to spend on the DH, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. If they stick to that it seems very unlikely that Pena is a real option as he is coming off a season in which he made $10 million with the Cubs. That’s too much of an extreme¬†pay cut.

He is a solid option though and I wouldn’t rule him out. They insisted they didn’t have the money to sign Kuroda and they did. They also like him, he used to be in the organization and they tried to acquire him at the deadline last year.

I think Carlos strikes out a little too much for my liking. While the power (28 HR's) is great we already have Swisher as the guy who either walks, strikes out or hits a homerun. We need contact hitters who will also hit some homers ( Damon )

Damon is a righty just like Jones, we need a lefty complement preferably. And walking alot is a bonus.Moneyball preaches on base percentage and Pena walked 101 times last year. He would only bat against righties ,which he has alot more success with.

    manny

Besides Damon and Pena, the Yanks have also contacted our old buddy Godzilla (Hideki Matsui). Just saying.

I like the idea of a Pena/Jones platoon…if Pena wants to be part of a winner. I could see Hal bumping up the $$ if Carlos would take a cut. We do have a surplus of pitching (now) and there are rumors of a Hughes trade with KC for Butler or with LAA for Trumbo/Morales. I don’t see anyone taking on Burnett’s salary…so he may be the #5 starter…like it or not
