The Yankees may not be on the search for a DH for much longer as Buster Olney of ESPN tweets that they are in position to add one of three hitters, Raul Ibanez, Johnny Damon, or Hideki Matsui, within the next week.
We’re getting awfully close to spring training so Olney’s tweet is far from huge breaking news. The Yankees are maintaining that they only have $2 million to spend and the first person whose contract demands drop that low could land himself in Pinstripes.
Chances are that they won’t surprise us by going over that level as Olney also tweeted that the Yankees would look to add another DH by the July 31st trade deadline if whomever they signed was not cutting it. That means that Damon is not getting his $5 million on a guaranteed deal. Instead they could do something with a smaller guaranteed number but many incentives based upon plate appearances.
Keep checking back in because at this point we are just 19 days away from when position players have to be in camp so something is going to go down soon.
